UK not technically we have one more minute, so will start in one minute.
I can trust this is working right.
Hi everybody, we're just waiting for.
Yeah, the clerks should be at 6:00 o'clock, which is in just one minute, then I just started.
Alright, it is 6:00 o'clock so will get started Uhm Hello. Everybody my name is Andre Columba. I'm the Dean of international programs here at Loyola and I will give you the essentials about studying abroad at Loyola and why it is so popular so welcome to our session on study abroad.
So some statistics on study abroad I-527 Euro student studied abroad last year. That's about 64% every year of our students who will have an international experience so study abroad is extremely popular actually a lot and I will tell you why of course through this presentation.
Uh the vast majority of our students will study abroad of juniors, so during their freshman year they investigate the options offer more their turn information sessions junior year. They go abroad and seen any other come back and tell their friends of wonderful it was.
So why study abroad, we encourage our students to study abroad because we know it makes them more competitive on the global market when they look for a job when they ask for when having interview for Graduate School as soon as I mentioned study abroad. People very intrigued and want to know more. It's a way to let people know who you are, and how you fared in a very different environment. Different culture different country and still manage to do well and get good grades and learned alot.
So it's a good compliment for you education. It's a great way to learn about culture by of course, being on location and interacting with people that you might never.
Meet otherwise it's a wonderful way to increase your language skills as you know when you are bored. You have to use that foreign language have been studying and you learn so much more when you are doing it in real life situations on the street in restaurants in the classroom, so great way to get the Mail and that foreign language. We've been studying if you if you want. It's a way to learn a new language of course.
Uh all students I noticed in different cultures and different languages. Nowadays young people around the world speak some English, so the culture. The language barrier is not what it used to be, but nonetheless. We want our students to learn some basic sentences to be provided to be interact with local people and make the effort to learn a little bit of their language when they are there. Of course, it's a great opportunity to travel but I must insist that study abroad is not?
The trip of programs on the trips are students are registered at regular universities. They take courses. There 5 of the universities. We work with are among the best 200 universities in the world, so that can be quite challenging so students do travel. A lot and never wonderful time, but it's definitely not a trip. They leave and learn in a very different culture and country and of course, they build life skills are students abroad become more independent they build a lot of resilience.
They're not as afraid of you know, traveling or being abroad. After a semester. So there's a lot of what is called now soft skills that are very useful for the rest of the tree of life so starting over with Loyola. We offer immersion programs with different levels of benefits class and housing options so.
Every word is important here immersion programs. We mean that we register all students at local universities with local students taught by local professors. It's very well. There's maybe 1 or 2 exceptions, but it's very rare that our student scoreboard with only Loyola students and only American Press is they have to. They become students at another universities and they go by their rules and regulations.
And another important part of this sentence is that we don't have 2 programs at our like because the national context is very different in different programs going to Newcastle will be very different in England will be very different from going to Cape Town in South Africa or in Japan or in Thailand. Every program is very different from all the other programs. We have so it will be important for students to compare what is the housing? What is the setting?
What kind of groups we send it with a large group, small group and a lot of details like that so they have freshman year and sophomore year to compare the programs and see how they are set up a great thing is that financial aid may be used on all of immersion programs with the exception of the affiliation and model number of program so.
Last time I counted we had 34 programs and those 34 program so basically.
Almost all us all our programs are allowed financially to travel with the students. We have one affiliation in Rome with Duke University where financial aid doesn't go and of course, if students decide to study abroad without going through Loyola then lower financial aid will not apply it. They use that external program but non later program. But if the user of program or their financial aid will go and that's also that also explains why this is so popular.
We have a great picture of our students. I think it's in Cape Town, South Africa. So Cape Town is an example. It's one of the we have 5 of our programs are in one of the best.
200 universities in the world, so those can be very challenging going to Cape Town, South Africa. Academically is quite challenging so some programs will require a higher GPA for that reason we require 2.75 GPA to study abroad, but some program requires 3.0.
And others will be very competitive might sort of cut off my dear little higher than that, so students have to be selected. They are selection criteria for admission to study abroad.
Janet is not a trip so we sent you links to live and study in another country so we want to make sure they succeed. So instead of students that are strong and will succeed when we send them abroad.
So students must attend once a year abroad Model 1 session before they completed the required application and this is important. So students understand what they're getting into when they go abroad are before they apply cumulative GPA to be considered for study abroad. Students must have at least a 2.75. Some of our programs require a higher GPA 3.0 for consideration emission 2.5 is required for summer programs and study tools so there is a.
Required minimum GPA and we are very strict with this we don't make exceptions for the minimum GPA required to study abroad. So as you don't have to show their strong enough for getting weekly to go to another University.
This being said, even though a program might require the 3.0 the cutoff might be higher for example, some programs every year by extremely popular an example would be open again or Athens.
In the Phone so those programs are very popular. Of course, we cannot send you know 60 students. There so there's a limit to what we can send and basically we take the highest GPA if we can send only 25 students to one program, then we take the 25 highest GPA's so even though the cut off the program might require one year 304 very popular programs. You cut off, depending on the year could be 3.3 three point four 3.5.
For the most popular programs so students when they apply have to give us different options. First choice second choice third choice and they should also give us an option in the fall and in the spring.
Here we have 2 minutes children's reply for the fall semester, so some students have to consider going in the spring, if they apply only to very popular programs that might fill up.
One with the three options, they might have to consider going into spring.
So the strong GPA is an important selection criteria.
Then, social behavior disappear record we Donuts and we do not send abortion server history of serious disciplinary problems.
Maybe 15, only record when they apply and we check again before they get on the plane so we want to make sure since we send abroad will not get in trouble, they will complete the semester and get good grades. Then courses should fit into the Royal Decree program again going abroad. They have to study other demanding universities and we make sure they will find the courses, they need to graduate on time.
If they don't find the closest Chinese restaurant on time, then we move them to another program that will work for them, but usually by the time students apply they know what courses are offered. They know what courses are required in each program so it works out very well and they apply to programs that work for the majors and minors, but again we do an activity interview with each student before we send them abroad to make sure the courses will work, so it will be important for them, too.
Save the right courses to go what?
Programs are competitive and they have captain. It's that's what I was saying earlier social itself to give us 3 options when you want to study abroad. Hopefully, they'll get their first choice about 80 percent 75% of our students if you get there first choice.
But some students have to go to your second choice of your choice and some students have to go into spring. Even though maybe they wanted to go in there in the fall in their first options.
So they have to be flexible.
A single deadline for the entire year so students apply every year.
Right after Thanksgiving, the second Wednesday after Thanksgiving and all students who want to study abroad. The following year. Whether it's in the fall or in the spring semester have to apply by that one deadline in their sophomore year after Thanksgiving. We encourage them to apply just before Thanksgiving, but not don't wait until the last minute to reply.
I guess you change your mind or you have to write this essay to apply?
Students must consider both fall and spring. The options to go abroad again because the full options might fill up systems have the flexibility of considering the fall and spring.
Importance of academics abroad, so we do send students to universities to study and so it's important to select their program, according to their major and their Academy codes. Some majors should go to some universities rather than others. For example, are stem students. We highly recommend they go to Newcastle University, where they have a wonderful Medical School Medical Hospital on campus.
My wonderful training and all this time, 'cause of law students need offered in New Castle to some majors are better served in some destinations study abroad requires scale for like any planning so that's the discussions. The students have with us. Doing the sophomore year. So this saved white crosses before their veggies to save their microcystic abroad.
I can remix must be the students first priority abroad, so they should plan their trips after they have their academic schedule after the planter courses.
Travel only after courses schedule is confirmed.
The teaching styles abroad would be different, and expect tensions would be very different. Students who go to Newcastle, England, there would be with British professors who teach the British way they give papers that have different expectations. There will be different kinds of exams. So students have to adapt to different countries different styles. Different teaching styles and as what you write such a wonderful experience that seriously nest in a very different life. We do transfer all courses. Grayson credit so there is no pass or fail.
Lost you don't support an older grades. They obtain abroad will affect your GPA back home, so they have to study abroad just as hard as they still at home.
Importance of cultural immersion.
So while students are enrolled in the host country. Universities they have to go by the rules of host country. Universities and stuff, sometimes very different from what we do at Loyola students have to write reflections about their time abroad. They have to write a blog when they were brought just to think about their experience.
It's 5 blocks. We told him the topics and let's pass or fail in that it shows on the transcript. It's 40 credit.
Students will engage with host community and enhance language skills. So we expect our students to engage with the host community and they have opportunities to join clubs to participate in the community service, sometimes in service learning. We don't want them to stay within? What is sometimes called a eula bubble abroad. They have to open up and make friends and connect with their host culture?
Students will learn different perspectives beliefs and ways to do things so of course, they will have conversations with people that.
Would they would not need here, and so that's part of the?
The experience and that was Mexico so wonderful.
How does it work within 4 years at Corona so when students are freshmen they explore all of our options they go on a website. We give a lot of presentations to mess in our groups. The first year or student groups during their sophomore year. They playing their course registration. They save the right courses to take abroad and they select their first choice program with two backups and they apply by the deadline junior here. They grow to explore the other wonderful time and senior year they come back.
And we asked them often to help us tell students about their experience so she needs understand better when it's like to be a problem. We have a group of students investors for example, that.
Talks to all applicants into our groups before they apply or before they go abroad.
What are the study options actually your dad still single for the year the semester or this summer?
Which program varies greatly in support structure and benefits it's important to me to research each one for example in some countries, we send a large group without signs 28. Thirty 3540 students in some countries, we send only one two or 3 or 4 or 5 others. We send 10 so the students have to think about their comfort zone do they want to be with a large group? Do they want to be able on their own.
Do they want to go for 2 semesters, so do they want to go for one semester.
Do they want to go for the summer so the year, most students will study abroad study during the Year this semester?
About 9% go for the the year. I don't really say the year, usually 'cause. It's not 12 months, it's just too Academy semesters.
About the vast majority goes for one semester and some students go for the summer so the vast majority go during the youngsters summer because they can use on their financial aid. And it rolls in very well in their 4 years at regular Interface Semesters at Loyola.
Lucas
05:16:50 PM
If they choose to go for the summer, is that typically between junior and senior year?
Where is the summer it's a shorter experience and it's also more expensive because students choose their financial aid for summer programs.
I will answer the questions right after my mother. I go through the PowerPoint evidence early audio questions by the way so you can send them under 1 incident.
So those are the 3 main ways to study abroad. We have 6 summer programs mostly in Europe.
Off it through Loyola professors what costs are associated with study abroad so.

Can all majors study abroad? I will be majoring in computer science and have been told at other schools that this is difficult to study abroad with this major.

If I'm not mistaken, your Facebook or Instagram page said that Loyola had a campus in Italy. Can you confirm this?
In general, students pay Loyola tuition. They pay Loyola housing, but for some programs that pay housing aboard the payola deposit to study aboard they pay. Another program fee, which is $500 Studio Broadfield.
And in exchange, we can use all the alola financial aid, except for finishing on other programs.
Benjamin Weckstein
05:17:54 PM
Hi! This is Ben Weckstein from the Undergraduate Admission office! We will answer all questions at the end :)
But remember programs vary a lot in Costa boarded they go, some countries are more expensive to live in than others. The semester in Copenhagen. For example, would be more expensive than a semester in Thailand because living in Thailand is much cheaper.
Study abroad uh options, so we have many, many, many studio board options and again. It's important to compare so students should think about.
Um what courses they can take in all these programs and also we encourage students to challenge themselves. Students often said. So Once Upon a time in opportunity that will happen once in India live.
It might happen again in their life, but it's a great opportunity. So we encourage students to consider a program that will be.
Exciting to them that they might never be able to do ever again. For example, you know they'll probably have many opportunities to go to Paris or Rome or London. But they will very rarely have an opportunity to leave in Asia to live In Sync approval to live in Thailand, which we live in South America or leaving South Africa. So we encourage them to consider destinations that might be really exceptional and very different.
So many more programs. They all on our website and yeah, I counted 34. Last time and all over the world except in the Antarctica probably wouldn't ever program, there yet, but on the world continents otherwise.
I need a summary of faculty that programs so in the summer, they are three credit programs. We have one in Monterrey in France in the Czech Republic in Spain in Italy 9 in France again in Paris.

So we have 2 kinds of summer program. Some of 3 or 4 weeks. Long in June. Usually, one is in July or we have also main messages on my programs now will remain Mister. Summer program in Paris and one in Ireland. Those are only from May 18 until June 7 and their brand new.
Nonlawyer summer programs would be if you don't find a summer program abroad. They can they want to attend they have to contact somebody in my office missed it, I who will work with them to make sure all their courses were transferred to the eula that's another opportunity for this summer.
Other possible expenses to consider sometimes students have to get immunization vaccine for certain countries. But it's rare you have to have a passport. Sometimes they have to pay for visa. Sometimes they have to pay for their health insurance.
Some countries require background check FBI background check It's very rare only chili I can think of replies that sometimes it's abetting package abroad. That's additional cost but it's rare.
You have to pay for their transportation to the airport and application fee, and sometimes and some mailings.
Or the official transcript from Loyola and you have to send at times.
This is not all programs some programs.
Expenses abroad so students band abroad on average. About $4500 on going out having fun traveling it all depends on how much they travel in a number to this shop. We have some students who do very well with $3000 in one semester.
Um depending on where they are, and what the program includes other students spend a lot more than that. But on average, 4500 day travel a lot another wonderful time.
It's important for them for money wise to compare what is included in program? What is not included some programs include a lot of trips for example, if they go to live in Belgium. They have a trip to France that's included in the program in the fall territory to Italy. That's including program in the spring and it's already paid for by the program. But if they go to Copenhagen. It does not include anything so they have to compare? What is what trips? What activities are included in each program that will be important as I said earlier some destinations would be more.
Expensive than others living in Paris in Copenhagen will be more expensive than even in Thailand or leaving in Ghana. Of course, that would be much cheaper.
Driving outside your host country would increase the cost that would be very expensive. So I encourage all students to visit their host country. They go to Spain. Many beautiful things to see in Spain. They do not have to see different country every weekend.
That that makes it of course, more expensive and keep dining out travel and shopping under control. Students usually spend more money at the beginning of the program because that is oriented don't know really where to eat so they tend to eat out. Most men woman. But after 2 or 3 car 2 or 3 weeks, they know exactly.
How to save money and what is expensive? What is not so?
middle and the end of semester ends up being discussed in the beginning.
Alright last slide what should I stress to my students so important is important. Remember that students must attend an information session before the applies so they know what they're getting into they have to meet the deadline if they missed the deadline they will not be considered.
You have to stay on Top of the paperwork when they go abroad before they go abroad. We prepare our students very well. We have at least 3 workshops with them to do all the paperwork for the visas for to be admitted at the school to vent registration and all that so they must do the paperwork before they go board.
They should know it's competitive to be accepted to study abroad and some programs are more competitive than others. And they have to give us options, including options in the fall and in the spring.
They must consider both fall and spring. It's an academic endeavor. They're going to class. It's not just a trip abroad.
Learning and living in a different environment will be will be important. It's not loyal, it would be very different formula grades and behavior. Toyota will affect you after you got plans so they have to get good grades and they have to have no disciplinary trouble in order to go abroad.
And they have to take time to investigate the difference between all the programs freshman year is not too early to begin.
And finally I can take some of your.
Brendan

What are the most popular destinations in Europe for students to go to?
Questions I have several questions here.
Isa
05:24:34 PM
Do I have to wait until junior year if I want to study abroad during summer?
And Uh, I will start with the first one, so the first one, is if they choose to go for the summer is that typically between junior and senior year.
So uh the summary it depends on what causes the students need cause some summer programs. Kanatak students at the end of their freshman year at the end, so they cannot go but at the end of the senior year 'cause at the end of senior year. Typically they're not real.
Good afternoon so it's either end of freshman year sophomore year or junior that they go to a summer program.
Lauren
05:25:21 PM
How does studying abroad affect housing on Loyola's Campus ?
Some summer programs offer courses that freshman can need but usually they go abroad in at the end of their sophomore year that you hear some students who could not go abroad otherwise or did not want to go vote for semester or year. They go to the summer. For example, this program in France offers French 101102103104 order levels of French so these could be taken by freshman.
But usually the courses offered in the summer work better for suffering rolls and for their tunics.
Carolyn
05:25:44 PM
Do all classes abroad give you credit at Loyola? Is there a maximum of classes you can take while studying abroad?
The next question is can all major study abroad. I would be majoring in computer science and health been told at other schools that is difficult to study abroad with this major.
Kenzie
05:26:00 PM
Do students in the global studies program get preferential treatment in the selection of countries abroad
Program because it works very well with rum major.
Computer science and you go to University dot office computer science courses or you can still go abroad. But you take only core courses and free electives or minor causes causes for your mind and you do all your major courses before and after you study abroad that happens quite a lot with students in engineering. For example, so engineering students. That kind of their major courses before they go abroad and after the global so when they go abroad that they take only.
Golf courses or electives over causes for their mind.
So again either you go to the program before it works very well with your major.
We cause doesn't go well with your major at all but then you trying to order courses carefully to get major courses before and after, so that might be the case with computer science that might be difficult to find the word.
So we are closely with your advisor.
Next it says if I am not mistaken your Facebook or Instagram page, said Acula. How do campus in Italy? Can you confirm this?

Can students studying Speech Pathology and Pathology study abroad
Benjamin Weckstein
05:27:27 PM
https://www.loyola.edu/department/international-programs/locations/programs/rome
We don't have a Loyola campus in Italy in Italy. We have, we are with John Cabot University. I'm not sure what are Facebook or Instagram page says I would have to double check in Italy? We are with John Cabot University University is in American campus. So it's in American University with an American campus.
Benjamin Weckstein
05:27:35 PM
Information on our program in Rome!
Maybe that's what it says, and uh all students take American courses, then that housing is either endurance or independent apartments downtown Rome.
So that's a question about Italy. We don't have a Loyola Campus really anywhere, but University campus.
Uh next question high uh.
Oh, OK this is from then.
Next question says to you study abroad options. There's a link that's we use our website to see or studio code options. Of course, we have a lot of information there next question is what are the most popular destinations in Europe for students to go right so again we do encourage students to go to places they would not see otherwise or they might not. See for the rest of their life so weird questions to consider programs outside of your.
Reality is of course, a lot of students want to go to Europe and that's fine. The most popular programs that change from year to year depending on that don't know what students post on Facebook. What's his post on Instagram that change from year to year right now, the most popular programs in Europe tend to be.
Athens Rome Quark, Newcastle, those are the most popular probably in that order.
The so those can be very competitive and if it happens that some students will give us only 3 very competitive programs for the fall.
Don't get any of them we have about 30 students every year we get about 550 applications. Every other 550 applications. We have about 30 students. Every you don't get any of the three options because they gave us only very popular for programs that are so competitive.
Yeah, they couldn't get in.
So then those students have to consider going into spring because by by the time we consider them the for programs are full.
So it's important to be vastly different options. When you apply to study abroad, even though the vast majority of Australians get their first choice.
Uh do I have to wait until June year if I want to study abroad during the summer. No, you can study abroad. It depends on what courses are offered in the summer so we have something to say about the end of freshman year on the end of sophomore year.
I mean, you have to check on our website. What courses offered in the summer and if they work for you, if they work for you, you don't have to wait until June.
Understood you would affect housing on Loyola campus. So the Loyola. This is a question for housing and I'm not an expert on Loyola housing.
Uh basically the process is the same for students while abroad and.
Just just go to our program get housing on campus when they return. But for this you would have to discuss the housing situation with the housing office itself.
Uh do all classes abroad give you credit at Loyola Yes is there a minimum of classes. You can take what's training abroad, so as you don't sweat it. Go abroad after take a full load. It just as if they were at your unit so they take the equivalent of 5 level across is.
Yeah, the quivalent of 1500 credits when they go aboard the minimum. They have to be full time when they go abroad in order to have a student visa.
So you have to take at least minimum of 4 courses every semester 5, no more than 6.
So it's a full load just as if they were actually.
Do students in global studies get preferential treatment in the selection of countries are both no they do not.
You apply like everybody else and they're treated like everybody else, so they give us part, the what happens with Global Studies is after those students are interested in less traveled destinations.
Liam
05:32:18 PM
Is there an opportunity for students to do internships for credit while abroad?
Very interested in this afternoon countries right like Chile, Argentina, or South Africa or West Africa. So those programs rarely fill up. But if they apply to popular programs. They just in the pool with everybody else just like everybody else.
Can students study speech pathology uh an speech pathology aboard a this is very well. There are some speech pathology causes. I believe in Australia, so in that case. What those students do is the plan. Just speech pathology courses before and after the semester study abroad and when they study abroad. They take mostly quiet courses and electives and causes of their mind. So it's one of those majors.
Or where they take their offer major courses before and after their studio board and that works very well. We send speech pathology. Students are bored all the time it's the same with accounting is the same with Engineering is the same with some other majors in education.
That means you cannot go vote for more than one semester, usually with a major like this and you work closely with your advisor to plan your courses before and after use delivered for your major.
Um so again check the website For more information.
Is there a next? Question says is there an opportunity for students to do internships for credit while award?
Hayley
05:33:39 PM
What is housing generally like abroad? Do students stay with host families or on campus?
So this is uh it depends on the program in general. This is very difficult to do internship for credit while abroad. But we have students who have done it in 11. Belgium cause we have a full office to support our students in Belgium and we've been in Belgium for a long, long time since 1987, so in a couple of programs like Belgium and.
And maybe England and uh also Spain and Madrid. It might be. It is possible to do internships for credit aboard but it's definitely not in all programs. I would definitely recommend living Belgium first choice for these clothes. I know students have done this invention.
England and Spain could be an option as well. We actually interested in France as well so that might be an option in months.
What is housing generally like about 2 students stay with host families on campus so in general law students stay in dorms when they go.
And we don't have any program that's that require students to do Wednesdays. We used to have that, but no more. So students, either the rest metrically. They do is stay in dorms, but they don't send me very different from the concept.
Nathaniel Brickhouse
05:35:30 PM
We have time for one or two final questions.
Some programs give the students the the option to living independent apartments. We have one program in Paris. For example, they have to live in independence apartments through an agency called the blue stuff that finds apartments for them because the University work with in Paris does not have guns, but it's very rare and some programs give the options that in Spain to inside the options to live in dorms or to live with host families. We highly recommend you been sleeping with host families.
They have that options because it's much better, they eat. They eat better. The families are screen. And they're very friendly. It just rings are sick you know the families can help them.
And if they need any help today eat better. They get company. They don't get us home sick. You know they sometimes go to the market together? Do some activities so the homestays are wonderful.
Kenzie
05:36:01 PM
Thank you for your time, very informative
But the vast majority of our students and it's 80 students. Steven Jones University Jones. We have time for one or 2 final questions.
Can see anymore question but?

If there are no more questions, this recording will made available for anyone who would like to watch it again or share with anyone looking for more information! Thank you everyone for joining us this evening, GO HOUNDS!
I was somebody says thank you. Thank you. Thank you for saying thank you. My pleasure.
Alright I think were done so. Thank you very much for your time and let us know if you have more questions.
