This just means that it's ****** ** and when you're ready, yeah, um first broadcast video so you can do it as fast right now if you want.
So then there's some weird kid waiting for you 'cause it doesn't look good life until the actual time.
Would actually I would press it suppress it wrote the two guests are Patricia and toes and that's all.
As soon as 6:00 o'clock here.
Hi everybody, welcome and thank you so much for joining me, this evening. Uh my name is Jay Peak rail. I'm going to accounting professor here at Loyola and I'm happy to be talking to you today about these challenges School of Business will quick if you have any questions after this. I want you to know my contact information. My cell Phone number is 7177468857. That does true story actually anagram to 717 shout. JP my email address is jake.rail@loyola.edu so with that, said.
I want to get into this. I wanna get started talking about what time you mix the Sellinger school so special.
I want to get across you most is that I feel like I am so fortunate to be here and I hope that comes across throughout this discussion. We're about to have So what I want to tell you is what's here and then what's next so first of all how this all comes together, the way courses are broken down majors minors study abroad all the stuff that nuts and bolts that actually goes on here and then success stories and what happens after graduation system statistics an if we have time I have one awesome. Cat picture, which you're going to have to suffer through because my cats, gorgeous, I'm just saying.
Try to can't even deal alright so let's first talk about how this works, so if you come here and you are a Selinger student. This means that because we're Jesuit school your first of all going to be taking an awful lot of liberal arts core classes so this includes everything from writing and history to math and science to philosophy and theology with ethics all kinds of good stuff thrown in now. Some students and maybe a few parents may think that this is too much core and to be honest. There plenty of schools that would agree with you, but I'll tell you why.
I feel like the core is really beneficial part of this experience, I want to give you an example. These 2 students are named Alex Bullington, Greg Dinardo. They were accounting majors here several years ago, they got their CPA license is a couple years after they graduated and after a couple of years of working for accounting firms. They broke off. They started their own business called orbit was a polling firm. They had these great ideas. They put in so much energy into it. I was so happy every time I got to talking and one time, we were getting beers after after their drugs and abandoned.
I asked him OK, so while this is going on.
Think back and tell me what was the most important class that you took and true story. I was hoping they would tell me it was my class and little ego, there, but there was my fault. They actually told me it was philosophy. They said that while yes. You know technical skills are of course, valuable it's the critical thinking that you develop through the liberal arts that let's you make better decisions and it's not just talk at this point they've actually got bought out which is the goal of most startups and let's just say they're doing pretty well. I'm really proud of him anyway. So you take your core classes, then you move on to the.
Business foundation now different majors have different combinations of these but the basic packages. You can be taken accounting classes. Info system management marketing business. Statistics international business business law finance operations business policy. The italicized classes by the way are the ones that you can also major in and the idea. There is to try it. Before, you buy it and that was a quote from me. Just now I'm just saying sorry. I'm stupid you're going to learn that through this whole thing they should not have had me do this, but anyway, as long as we're here.
So just to recap the majors. You can pursue within the Salinger School of Business are economics, accounting, Infosystems Supply Chain Management Management itself marketing finance and international business.
Alright so I'll leave that up there for a second if anybody wants to write that down. This is the teacher in the I'm like I know this is an important slide believe it up for a second.
And by the way if anybody has any questions. Feel free to type them in. I will read them at some point will be good anywhere. Now, how the major works. We've talked about the liberal arts core. We've talked about the Selinger Core. The business foundation now within the major this is usually 6. Sometimes more advanced subject matter classes, so advanced marketing concepts advanced management advance finance and there are plans to enable cross counting in the future but many majors actually offer major electives.
So for instance, if you are a management. Major then several of your courses are electives among certain predetermined groups. So you and I could both be management majors less safe and still have completely different course tracks because we have different career goals and it's all covered double majors also are quite possible. Becausr majors are relatively small in the grand scheme of things, so for instance, a marketing major would only need 6 extra classes to double and finance or in management.
Now let's move on to minors. We've got more than 18 fifties. California that is a minor joke and I'm assuming you were giving me some minor left or right now, so thank you very much. I'm here all week. We have a ton of minors. Some of which matter more than others. For instance, I've never seen a business. Major minor in biomedical physics, but I suppose it's technically possible. I've highlighted a few here because they seem particularly relevant for instance, communication goes naturally with just about any business field because if I'm able to express myself.
Then the ideas I'm trying to get across will hit harder and that's true for accounting management. Marketing info systems across the board English for the same reason again. If I'm able to true story. I myself was an English major undergrad. So I know that being able to write an effective and elegant way will get you want to go more quickly. It's not necessary, but it's a good idea. There are more majors. Again, I've highlighted a couple that I think are particularly relevant statistics. For instance, is a popular major among our marketing actually have popular minor.
Among our marketing majors because a big chunk of marketing is market research is knowing who is going to bite for certain promotions. Where to sell how to sell to understand the numbers is actually a pretty big deal. An understanding marketing writing for the same reason as English, and communication again. If I can write well, I can go further.
Information systems is actually a business minor that is available to business majors. It's only 3 extra courses and it contains things like data science and database management things we're going to be talking about just a little bit.
There are interdisciplinary minors as well. Two of them are data science and innovation and entrepreneurship. Those are the two. I want to focus on because those are among the newest and are among the most popular and there are some pretty good reasons for that. So let me explain to first data science minor. It's interdisciplinary like I said it consists of statistics classes computer science classes. An Infosystems classes. The basic question is how do we manage and get value from big data now a lot of people will talk about?
There's so much information that woman. That's true. Let me just I'd rather show them tell so I have a quick question for you. When does Baltimore. The city of Baltimore make the most money from speed cameras In other words. When are people speeding most often in the city of Baltimore 9 noon or 5:00 PM and will give you 30 seconds? We will not play. The Jeopardy theme and you know, I won't actually give you 30 seconds because we've got more stuff to talk about but here's the answer.
I'm sorry I'm just kidding. But that actually is the data that we would need to get the answer. But it's over a million rows 21 college 22,000,000 cells if I actually open. This file we would be here for probably about 30 seconds and it doesn't really tell a story so let's do better.
Here's that same answer and tableau.
The correct answer is noon now my personal theories. That's because the people commuting on 9 to 5 know with the speed cameras are so they know when to slow down but again that's me editorializing don't quote me on that. But even more. I can actually show you where which cameras make the most money and how much money they've made and which year they made that amount of money.
It's amazing, I have another one for you so when our bikes, rental bikes use most often in city of Boston during morning rush hour. Lunch time or the evening rush again, I will give you 5 seconds just to take a guess.
Here we go you can see the spikes across genders happen, mostly in the morning but especially in the evening by, thought about this? Why the evening spike is higher than the morning spike just again be editorializing is because you don't mind getting home. A bit sweaty and then you get to work so people may say I'll take a cab to get in 'cause. I don't want to be a sweaty mess. When I get to work again. Just my thoughts, but the point is we can see this information without having to deal with the numbers. I have one more illustration for you this one is fun.
Take a guess at what this is.
It looks to me like a bunch of infrared ghosts that are slowly approaching, bringing doom. But in fact. This is a heat map of movie reviews from 1993 through 2004. We have the good like Schindler's list the OK like 10 things I hate about you in the not so good like at one from 2004 which.
Halle Berry's career choices are not part of our curriculum, but in any case now. The reason I bring this up.
Is because I want you to understand Oh? Here's one more by the way we are actually able to take the data from hurricanes and heat map and show their intensity and their path. The reason I show you this.
Is because I didn't make these graphs?
They weren't shown as part of a promotional package by Tablo.
All of these were student made.
In an information systems class taught by a professor Paul town in the info Systems Department.
I bring this up and I'm so proud of this is again our students are learning how to do this. Now imagine if you're using this with publicly available data and you're able to come up with these kind of compelling visuals. Imagine what you could do if you were working for a company you would access to their data. Imagine what stories you could tell again so we teach students. The tools that they will need to make an impact on the larger world I love it. I love it. Speaking of which another minor we have is innovation and entrepreneurship.
Now it's funny, I've been doing open houses for awhile.
And there's some questions that students answered and some quite shooting. Some questions that students ask and some of the parents ask Ann usually the two are pretty much opposite it's one thing that everybody's been asking me about this entrepreneurship and it makes sense. You know, I would like to start a business. I'd like to change the world. My own way of being my own boss. It's interesting we responded to demand.
And we built together and entrepreneurship minor with 4 minor tracks creative social engineering and science of majors in progress and we are working on that we have good people too. I know these people very well Wendy Bolgers. She is our founding director. She has shown such entrepreneurship herself into getting this program off the ground. I am amazed at the thing. She's been able to accomplish in the past year and a half bill Romani.
He's our entrepreneur in residence. He's worked everywhere. He's done everything. These people had walked the walk now. The Center for injured innovation entrepreneurship itself consists of an accelerator where our school actually takes ideas, both from Loyola students an from local community members and funds them and supports them and helps them grow. We have leadership fellas. We have partnerships with established people we have an idea space, which I'm going to show you in a second. Here's our first class of Bolter. Preneurs some of these are from Baltimore.
Citizens some of these are from Loyola students for instance, mechanics cupcakes. I've actually eaten one of Man's cupcakes because they're able to cater other events at loyal because we support our small, launching preneurs and the idea again is to foster that spirit to say you don't need much to make a difference to get started want to get students into that entrepreneurial mindset, so this is across the University doesn't matter what your major is you're eligible to apply it is extremely competitive.
But it's good stuff and it creates this energy on campus on very proud of.
Here's how it works by the way so we have the idea space. It's actually in the library includes things like a 3D printer, 3D glasses includes an awful lot of good stuff and it's where the students get together on Thursday nights and just talk and hear from entrepreneurs from lawyers from other kinds of counselors and people who can say. Here's how I want you to do what you're going to do it's really good stuff.
Study abroad is absolutely a Crown jewel oil now there are two ways. You can do it, you can go abroad for a full semester or occasionally for a full year or you can take a study tour now full semester options abound. They are everywhere. Bangkok to Belgium. Cape Town to Cork. Any major can go anywhere. There are some locations that are more favorable to certain majors. But if you plan in advance. You can pretty much go anywhere. You want as long as we've got a partnership there. There were also smaller discipline oriented study tours.
Then go to certain places for certain functions for instance, accounting and finance have a joint trip to China, where they learn about international accounting and finance issues marketing goes to Disney World? Which if you can't. Epcot is like 17 countries right there. Just saying I'm jealous. I'm just saying whatever just say yes goes to Ireland, which is essentially the tech hotbed of Europe.
And it's important to note. You don't have to be for instance, in Infosystems. Major in order to take the Infosystems trip. In fact, I have some pictures for you, real quick so on the last infosystems trip. They visited Intel's office is an island. Microsoft and the 3rd company along the bottom you can see the full name. But I'm sure you just need to do a Google search to see what it is sorry. I crack myself up and I can't see you not laughing. So I'm going to assume you are. I'm hilarious anyway. So we have study abroad options that's my point.
We also have honest science. We have several majors with their own societies. We also have a business. Wide Beta Gamma Sigma. It's the business equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa. I advise it. I'm so proud level ceremony every April. It's fun stuff, but we also have plenty of non honors clubs and organizations. Some started by faculty, but most started by students.
So take a look there to something for everybody and if there's not guess what you can start it.
There's one in particular. I want to call your attention to on the bottom right. The Cygnus aside for sales and marketing now. This society hosts an event now called a night of networking. This wasn't always the case. But in 2016. Professor Marillo who teaches in our marketing Department, she thought you know what our students don't have enough person to person handshaking networking experience. She said, OK, this is a problem. I can fix she made some Phone calls and I swear. I don't know how she managed to pull this off. But these are just some of the companies that have come.
Just a handful so just take a look through that we have local companies national companies. All industries all box of life. It's amazing and was great. I mentioned that this started in 2016.
Was not exactly a flash in the pan since that time the student participation count and the number of firms represented have both almost doubled.
When we do things we do them seriously, we don't do everything.
But what we do I like to think we do it right and we really mean? What we say here is by the way? How that looks it's not a fancy affairs somebody gets dressed up and they just go meet people. There's no there's no stated purpose, except to get people in front of each other.
All majors go all kinds of employees are there, it's a magical event. I love going just because I get to snap these pictures and show him off to you, it's good stuff.
Now there are plenty of other opportunities as well. One of our most famous is in the finance Department. There's an auditioned class called the Selinger applied portfolio. These students get access to $500,000 of our universities endowment money.
They get to invest it. They got to make pitches to each other and say we should invest in. I don't know Carnival Cruise line or AMD Micro chips or something and they decide collaboratively how to invest the money.
And they have to be a true story and their their professor Doctor D'souza is very proud of this, they routinely beat the S&P 500. So let's say I'm just saying I'm not saying they don't get a cut but anyway. That being ethical thing. But in any case, there very proud of what they do economics. They have the Fed challenge and they analyze trends and the make recommendations on Fed policy last year. They made it to the finals. They were there with the Ivy leagues and real quick. Let me just show you a picture real quick, they got to actually meet Fed chairman Jerome Powell.
And this is how I imagine that dialogue might that's my again editorial lesson, here, but they made it. We've got a trophy. They didn't win, but they were up there with Harvard, new pen like it was amazing and you should see Doctor Berger. He's the guy in the back. All the way on the left. He was so if you've seen him just like glowing when he talked to other faculty about these students. It was just had a whole something that makes me glad to be here and wait one more thing real quick. We also have in market. We have a class on customer experience management taught by actual Disney instructors.
So I guess you may be wondering what kind of Mickey Mouse operation. We have going on here. Sorry I'm sorry. I'm not sorry. These jokes are going to continue so quit now anyway. The Salenger Scholars as another kind of Crown jewel of the Business School. It's 25 to 28 select students now you're not admitted as part of the salingers calls. Instead, it's based at least in part on your first semester's GPA so you have to have a minimum 3 three with a three five preferred during that first semester and then you provide videos.
You actually have to record a video where you answer certain questions. It's a 2 stage selection process. But if you get in. But a lot of those business foundation classes that we discussed earlier you take as a cohort.
Do you you will all take for instance, managerial accounting finance international business you'll take these classes together and the professors know that it's an under section so they honestly put a little bit. I don't want to say that put more into it, but they certainly expect the students to get more out of it.
Sounders college experience on Fridays. This is tailored toward specific class years, so for sophomores. It's on careers for genius. It's on making an impact for seniors. It's on transitioning into a Delta. It's a nice experience. There are extra challenges for instance, this video here this opportunity.
Students were able to go to the New York Stock Exchange and ring the Bell.
Here's another one we have every year, the business leader of the year dinner. It's a marquee event for all of Baltimore and every year. Student Speaker selected to precede the actual winner and 2 years ago. We had a salad is calling and Chris Mateo, who gave one of the most powerful and emotional speeches. I've ever heard anywhere, and he was a Salinger scholar what was great is that the rest of his senior classmates were invited because they were scouted. Selinger scholars to attend. This event, so they were able to hobnob with business leaders all around it was wonderful.
Another real quick so uhm. I teach the managerial accounting under section and I asked the students when you reset a Watt start a restaurant that actually start one. But put together a menu and not just think about what will appeal to people but also I want you to cost these items. I want you to put together a menu and tell me will ya restaurant be profitable. I gave and only 2 weeks.
And they turned around with restaurant ideas with pricing overall and per unit and they came to meet some said. This restaurant won't be profitable. So we're not going to do it. Other said this could be. I was just again. So very proud of them. It was amazing what they were able to come up with in such a short time span, it's good stuff, it's really good stuff.
We also have one of another one of our marquee events is called building a better world through business.
And this is an event that consists of a keynote speaker panel discussion and a pitch competition. The keynote speaker last year was bill. Strickland you see him in 2nd. We had panelists from local businesses come to talk to any student who wanted to attend. We had a showcasing event where companies who were looking at actually improving society came from any career fair and then a lot of those employees came around and stayed for the pitch competition, which will talk more about later.
Real quick the picture on the Top left is from that panel discussion meet established people from different walks away.
Walking Baltimore comic talk about their experiences and answer student questions. The bottom by the way we filled. McGuire Hall, which is one of our bigger rooms with students who were either pit, making a pitch or agency in their classmates succeed.
I was amazing was a powerful moment to be here this year is from Bill Strickland's talk a bill. Strickland runs a series of private nonprofit schools that train students in inner city areas for jobs and he just talked about how successful he had been because he was able to put faith in people that society had written off.
And it was again it was another very powerful experience. We have here and we keep numbers on these so I can tell you that a lot of our students participate. Now the not applicable in 2018, is because the weather wasn't quite cooperating. But as a general rule every year. We see increases in participation like I said, We don't do everything here, but the things we do, we mean it?
And we really do it well.
Their engagement and service opportunities that were involved in as well. For instance, the bridge project. We're working with soon to be released incarcerated individuals. the Chesapeake detention facility. I have a student who is put together entire curriculum, helping her develop to talk about how these these people can learn about financial literacy about resume building to reduce recidivism to give them a chance at a better life. We do that. Here we have Colvin Bock grants, which is essentially where any student can put together an application to fund ideas.
To help make society better. I advise one of these grant applications. A couple years ago, where students said. I was a first generation college student and I had no idea how to fill out Fasa and I want to build a curriculum to help other first generation college students not make the same mistakes I did.
She was awarded the grant, it was great stuff. We also have just in general. All of these things are housed under these Center for community service and Justice, the CC SJ.
Honestly, that's what makes this Jesuit is the idea that we're trying to partner with local communities that we're trying to make society better not just for students for their neighbors as well, it's wonderful.
Now to go back to careers real quick meet the firms night is for our students. I tell them it is the best 2 hours pound for pound the best 2 hours. You could spend all year. Dozens of firms come hundreds of students. The biggest complaint. I get it. For years that the line to talk through the recruiters was too long and honestly that's a problem comfortable with dealing with this good stuff fully 10% of the undergraduate population attended last year, people know that this is where you go.
I get it was massive it was, it was crowded to the point of being uncomfortable and that's the way. I like it. He was just students meeting employers shaking hands taking names I love it.
And by the way so Speaking of outcomes enough about what happens here. Let's move forward. You ready for this. I'm just I'm just saying, you ready for this OK, so 83.4%, got jobs another 13.7 enrolled in Graduate School. You add in another percentage for students pursuing service or military opportunities and fully 99.0% of our students got where they wanted to go as their first destination.
Let me break this down for you so it's not just one major kind of carrying the rest. You'll see every major has similar numbers. In fact, I'm always embarrassed because I'm going to counter professor in our numbers are lowest but that's because a large portion of our students will go to grad school because the CPA license requires 150 hours.
But I will tell you that every grad student who's gone through our Mac program. My Masters of accountancy has gotten a job afterwards, so read too much into that, but essentially no matter what your major is.
It's very, very likely that you'll get where you want to go.
And it's not just any job it's where the students work.
Big names local and National.
Our students go places that they're proud to tell me about.
I I love to smile on their faces when they come in sometime in their senior sometimes in the junior say. I got an offer but that's what I'm talking about you know this is This is why we're all here right. It's great stuff Speaking of that process.
Internships or how that happens and I will tell you that internships are quite common to the point where I'm not so much happy that a student gets one as I am more concerned when they don't. Over 80% of our students graduate with at least 1 internship under their belt. Most of them are paid course credit can also be an option so some students will you say their management electives as an internship and get course credit for it great, go for it and I love it. Externships by the way not everybody knows but extend ships are so will explain real quick and externship is a much, much shorter opportunity kind of.
I'm getting to know you sort of thing. It's usually a precursor to an internship offer. The reason why these things exist is because people want to make sure that people there interning with R. Let's say sociable you can get along with them. It's not about your technical skills. It's about your personality, which is why it's so brief and it's usually something fun. It's a baseball game with some little like trivia thing or you have to like build a thing with just your elbows or something silly, but it's to see how you respond to challenges and how you respond to other people.
So I have students with 2. Three maybe 4 extra chips in the space of summer.
And again so that way they have their choice next year of internships, which means they have the choice that you're after of jobs. It's wonderful I may sound like I'm making this up a problem. This is all true stuff. I'm just I'm so proud of our students do.
Anyway, so how does this all happen there are so many avenues at this University that get you to where you want to go? We have an outstanding Career Center. They have connections several times every semester. I'm asked to go to lunch with the recruiter because they're spending all day here interviewing students. So yeah, I'll take him to lunch. They have training so you're not actually allowed to go for an internship interview until you've passed certain criteria so you've had your resume work done so. You've had interview practice. We want to make sure that our students go in and there.
Ready and honestly, they make us look good.
And it helps that investment for my Career Center pays off using the job statistics, not those 2 things on the right there handshake.
And we'll connect handshake is this awesome piece of software whereby students can post their criteria instead of them just looking for jobs.
Jobs can look for them, so if I'm unemployed. I miss it OK. I want a junior or senior. Let's say economics measure with at least this GPA who's taken at least, these courses. So then a student who's listed those criteria may get an offer.
Or request to interview from firm that they weren't even thinking about.
Excuse me it's A wonderful opportunity.
We'll connect as a similar idea, it's kind of like LinkedIn. But just for Loyola People's for friends and family and the idea is that people more experienced can hang out a shingle and say you know what I'm in this line of work and I'm able to.
Give career advice and or mentor and or I'm looking for somebody to employ so then students who signed up for will connect you can say I found a mentor through foil connected now. I know what it's like to get a job in supply chain or an international business. It's good stuff we have professional societies like.
Excuse me like the Sigma Society. We also faculty themselves for instance, we have an executive in residence was the former chief marketing officer of Under Armour. We have a board member who teaches our tax class his day job. He's the vice president of tax free trade. We have people who from Medicare. We have people who are currently or former corporate lawyers. So it's not that all of us. I'm kind of an ivory tower kind of guy and I admit that but we have plenty of faculty. You have the professional experience that our students are looking for when it comes time for them to make career decisions.
So real quick to kind of summarize. I want to explain to you. Why I love this place. First of all it is that spirit of entrepreneurship, so let me explain administrators are Dean came Indian get. She's wonderful and I'm not being paid to say that she's actually really good, she put on this thing called The Blitz and what this was was she wanted to help Loyola partner with the community in an entrepreneurial way. But she didn't want to dictate how that was done so we hired some facilitators who brought together community members so.
Pastors business owners kids people from across the spectrum along with plenty of Loyola community members and we got together, we did some fun exercises and we came up with ideas.
And we're exercising those ideas now that building a better world through business event came out through the blitz. It was good stuff faculty that tech track. The island trip. I was telling you about that didn't always exist. But we had faculty members. We have doctor talent who's from Ireland. He's at listen. I know, people there. Let's bring this together and he made it happen.
Students member I told you we talk more, but the pitch competition. Let me explain so the pitch competition again brings together people from all majors from all schools within the University. Let me show you how that came out here are our 4 winners. We had bronze silver and gold or at least third second or 3rd place third second and 1st place excuse me and also a People's Choice Award.
So we have people waiting for developing tech to address childhood illiteracy to make insurance more affordable with better information to make a fleet of solar powered buses and show how it would pay for itself overtime.
To teach young children about engineering and loved watching his pitches and planted the pitches that didn't win when nevertheless compelling the point is that we're getting students to try to go outside their comfort zone to take that risk to get used to taking risks. So when they graduate is not going to be a new thing for them.
I love that we are among Baltimore and we know it and we own it, and we're proud of it. You know they call it small to more because everybody here knows somebody. We have CC SJB of the awkward partnership. We have people whose job here is to figure out and implement ways that we can better partner with our neighbors.
They give you a quick case in Point Roxanne Gay, their very well known activist author. We had her on campus. Here she is. We were originally going to have her in McGuire, which you've seen before. But the response not just from Loyola students, but from the outside community that was invited with so strong.
We actually got her interes arena or basketball court, the biggest room. We have anywhere on campus and it was full. I managed to get a seat. It was full, but we're really touched my heart about this.
Was that afterward days later?
Roxanne gay got on Twitter.
And mentioned that we actually walked the walk, she said that she seemed Jesuit institutions that are kind of Jesuit in name only. She said that the focus. We had an Accessibility on community inclusion and really meaning what we say when we say we're Jesuit.
She said that meant something to him. He didn't ask her to say this we weren't expecting this, but I say this was like this is fantastic like she sees what we're trying to do what she recognizes it meant the world to me.
Final reason why I love this place is that I do not have to have faith in my students because faith is belief in the absence of evidence and I don't have that problem tell you one last story before we're done here and I'll take your questions so we run a program on campus called fighter stands for volunteer income tax assistance. The idea is that students get trained and once they pass an exam. They can go out to a clinic that we have on campus and do the income tax returns of load middle income community members who otherwise might have to pay for that service.
Maybe get ripped off now, the problem is that the training takes awhile 'cause you don't learn how to do taxes is no mean trick so our training day took 8 hours and 2 years ago in in 2019 brothers year ago. We were booking the training and we found out that the only day that the train is really available.
And we looked at each other like OK, the trainer said. Are you sure people are going to make it, I said, Yeah, there will I didn't question it for a second so I put up the sign up sheet. I said students just so you know the training is going to end at 5. You'll be at your game at 6:30, but I need you to be there for this.
In a couple of days before I got an email from the trainer again. He's a good guy. I don't want a number, he said. This is Super Bowl Sunday? Are you sure that people are going to be there for this.
And truth be told him he asked why she doesn't ask anything twice asserted to Dallas and yeah, they're going to be there in that sort of worry.
I had to go and get some paper sign so I got there around noon.
I saw every single seat filled and I don't know if you can see it. But there's one student and the 2nd row who had a Tom Brady Jersey. Remember this was 2019. It was the most neatly pressed garment. I think I've ever seen so he knew where he was going but he knew where he was.
Everyone was there, they were joking with each other, they're eating pizza. They were role playing it was wonderful and I thought to myself.
I'm so fortunate to be here.

If I applied to the Business School and became an accepted student, am I automatically accepted to the Sellinger School of Business? If not, when would I find out and what would the qualifications be for entry?
That's all I have to say out real quick there's my cat, he's wonderful. He's very handsome. He's a great guy, but anyway. That's that's all I had to discuss with you. Now I'm looking here. I don't see any questions just yet. I'll hang on for a minute. If anybody has any questions about again so programs curriculums outcomes study abroad. Anything else OK. So I have a question if I'm if I applied to the Business School and became an accepted student and I automatically accepted for the Summer School of Business and if not, when would I find out so.
Victor quick answer is when you are admitted here you are not a declared major of anything you can have an intended major now. The Sellinger School of Business does not have any different admission requirements from the rest of the school. So you don't apply to the seller school. You apply to loyal, but if you want to declare a major in finance marketing accounting. Whatever you just fill out a form and then you will go from having a core advisers who advise their students of all potential majors. You'll be accepted into the Business School you'll get it.
Grace
05:34:24 PM
What summers do students typically start get internships?
You get a major advisor who teaches in the discipline. You're majoring in life should be good. Now the sooner that you get to meeting with those people, the better off you're going to be, because again sometimes if a student wants to say double major and study abroad and have a miner well, then we've got a lot of things to fit in so it's best for you to at least find a professor and we're pretty. I like to throw a pretty approachable. People so if you're interested even though you're not technically allowed to declare a major until your sophomore year.
And find a professor in a major you want to pursue talk to that person and build a plan. I hope that answers your question.
Matteo
05:34:51 PM
Is there a list businesses you partner with for internships
OK, a Grace D'amico asks what Summers do students typically start to get internships. It depends on how much skill is necessary for the internship. So I will tell you that for instance. Again, I know accounting best will start with that. The Big 4 accounting firms will only allow you to have an internship a year before you get your 150 hours. However, smaller firms may say you know what will accept you 2 years before so I've had some students have had internships after their junior year. Then, after the senior or some after the software then after their junior.
Joe
05:35:36 PM
What areas/regions of the country are most students employed after graduation?
So it really depends on how broad Annette. You want to cast, which classes you've taken during which semesters, so that's a contextual question. But I can tell you that again. We are aggressively getting our students internships as soon as they are qualified for them. We have another question from Mateo is there a list of businesses. You partner with for internships. There's not a list per say, but what there is, is on handshake. Once once you're admitted and you have access to handshake. You can see you can search for either full time jobs.
John
05:35:53 PM
Thank you very much! When would I declare a Major?
Or internships, you can search by region by major by job industry. By all different types. So the list is pretty fluid because there's all kinds of companies that are always wanted to get involved with us, but you'll find out as soon as you graduate extremely as soon as you are accepted as soon as your administrators were kind of student get yourself a handshake account and you can have your pick of the litter. So to speak OK? What area is Anna regions of the country are most students employed after graduation. So the most popular 2 areas. Let's say the most popular 3.
Patricia Bryan
05:36:24 PM
John, you have to declare your major by the end of your first semester, second year.
Dermot
05:36:35 PM
That was a great overview, Thank you so much for your time! I have an older brother at Loyola so you really helped fill in some of the gaps about the business program.
Are the Boston area? New York and Baltimore MD? How and that's again? So some some people will say? Well kind of interview for a job there, while I'm here and the answer is yes, so plenty of our recruiters will just you just go in telling and listen. I want to interview for the ex office OK fine. They will put you on that pile and that's not a problem. I've had students employed in Washington state and Colorado and Alabama in Florida. So it's not a problem again. It's not as common.
But that doesn't mean it's a problem.
So again pretty much anywhere, you want to go if we have a partnership there, but we'll see what we can do when when I declare a major. The earliest that your declaration will so to speak count is your sophomore year. However, before that again. You can be an intended measure. It doesn't carry as much weight. But it does determine which classes you'll be advised to take for instance, if you are a liberal arts major than two of your liberal arts core won't be just general social science classes if instead your business major of any stripe than those social science classes should be.
Micro and Macro Economics.
But again so the sooner you declare your intention the better the sooner you declare your major also the better.
Ah, thank you picture OK, so um.

Is it Easy or Hard to switch majors in the Sellinger School of business and how long does it take to make a switch?
Alejandro
05:37:53 PM
How heavy do the Big 4 recruit?
Oh, I'm just a thank you will thank you. Thank you very much. German dumb that's that's very kind of you. This disloyal to have the five year CP program. Yes, it does, I helped build that thing. So yes, so some students will come in and say, I know I need 150 hours of Education for my CPA license. I want to do that. In 5 years. That's fine and we can make that happen. That's increasingly popular option, which again as a Co architect of our Masters of accounting program kind of happy that people are taking advantage some students will choose to take.
You can take up to 2 of your graduate classes during your senior year as 6 classes, which reduces the tuition of the graduate program 'cause. It's covered under undergraduate tuition and it also means you have more time to take the CPA exam. So I know that's fun for everybody right.
And there's just more information, I can if you've got more questions here. I tell you what. Let me go back to that slide with my contact info. So if you want to talk to me later. Please get in touch with having to answer more questions and your asks is it easier hard to switch majors in this Challenger School of Business and how long does it take to make a switch?
So the later you do it, the harder it is.

Thank you for the inspiring and informational talk. I can't wait for this fall semester to start!
John
05:39:05 PM
Do you have any classes devoted to Cyber Security or would that possibly be encompassed in another program?
Now, if you want to switch I've seen students which as late as the second semester of their junior year. But the good thing is in the reason why it usually doesn't come to that is that us being a Jesuit school big encore education and what that means is regardless of which major you're choosing you're going to have to have taken introductory classes in a variety of majors anyway. So it becomes less and less likely that you'll be surprised later on, but you don't like the major you've chosen because you have taken an intro class before you had to really make that major kind of.
Sick if that makes sense.
Alejandro asks how heavy do the Big 4 recruit pretty heavily. I tell you 3 of our Top four accounting recruiters. Every year our price. Waterhouse Coopers KPMG and come on now artist in Young Deloitte. Not so much just because they really doesn't have a big presence in Baltimore. But I can do it. Plenty of Deloitte students in Buffalo in New York and Boston. So yeah, they come pretty hard every year. It's good stuff. Thank you Elizabeth after that compliment you very kind. John asked you have any classes devoted to cyber security.
Matteo
05:40:06 PM
What percentage of students graduate in four years?
Yes, we do have I believe it's IS 358 is devoted to data on information security. Yes, we do, and we are I can tell you that as again as I say Society evolves as data science evolves. We pay more attention to those trends we have some.
Infosystems professors who are honestly all the time on Phone calls with with a cat with leaders of the industry. We actually haven't infosystems divides report that tells us. Hey, you know you should be teaching. This so right now, we have at least 1 information security class and I would not be surprised to see more in the future.
Patricia Bryan
05:40:32 PM
Matteo, that's 80% for all of our majors! That's 30% higher than the national average.
I see another question from my tail do you have information on that OK so are Patricia says it's 80% of all of our majors, which is 30% higher than the national average. It doesn't surprise me at all. If we invest pretty heavily in our students to make sure they succeed.
I don't see any other questions right now does anybody else have any other questions while I'm here.
If you'd like to see the cat picture again just let me know when I can make it sorry.

Are there any classes where we can learn about entrepreneurship
See another question tell John thank you very much. Mateo asked about when the entrepreneurial program would be a major. I can answer that yet, but my hope is soon given the amount of energy and interest that's gone into our minor.
I hope that it is soon and that's all I can tell you for right now is that I hope it comes soon and the good thing is if it comes within a couple of years. It is likely that a student will be able to switch into it. Again, I can't make any promises. Yet there a request restrictions on what I can say, but I hope that it is soon and I believe you do too.

Thank you very much for your time and for sharing your love of Loyola!
Ah Lauren if you called it jokes great. Thank you very much. Nobody calls my jokes great. They're just placeholders, but thank you so much. I worked **** ** Thomas are there any classes we can learn about entrepreneurship? Absolutely. That's part of the entrepreneurship minor is their introductory an capstone classes that talk about this that bring in guest speakers. And remember it's not just the classes that talk about entrepreneurship. It's the pitch competition and we have several throughout the program consuming throughout the school so even if you don't want to take a bona fide class in entrepreneurship.
You'll get chances for pitch competitions 4 case, competitions, so it's just kind of in the bloodstream, honestly would be difficult to be a student in the Business School of loyal and not have touched interesting that have touched entrepreneurship with some point.

Is there reciprocity at other nearby colleges for classes if not offered at Loyola?
Stephanie
05:42:39 PM
Thank you so much! This was very informative and I appreciate you taking the time to introduce us to the Sellinger Business program
Do you get to explore all aspects of the business as a freshman? No, not yet 'cause you've got too many liberal arts core classes to take. However, by the time you graduate with a business. Major you will have taken intro classes in a variety of fields. Everything again from finance to supply chain management to Infosystems. So if you want to see it, you're going to see.
Do business students as a slideshow available for download. Do me a favor and email me and I will send this to you would be happy to.
OK, one second, I have Patricia here who's gonna provide more information on that.
Hi everybody is your friendly neighborhood admission counselor, but they said Brian so just as I had a heads up. Once the video concludes. This video chat is actually uploaded onto our website and you can actually download that video so if you don't want to email. The professor you can also do that, but know this information will be acceptable to you. Thank you very welcome even know that I'm being recorded, I would have done a much better job if I'd known I'm kidding.
Kenny
05:43:48 PM
In the 5 year program can you get your MBA and CPA? A friend of mine got both and I am not sure if he did through a 5 year program or separately.
So yes, it may email me or just go on the website and check it out and thank you. Again, do business students go on to get law degrees. Yes, they do, I've had several students have asked me for help with their else at so yes, I know that some students will go for environmental law for corporate law. Yes, so plenty of business students. Without it being an official prelaw program will nevertheless be admitted to law school actually have a couple of students who just passed the bar exam. I saw it on LinkedIn. I'm so happy it's good stuff.
Nick
05:43:51 PM
What AP scores do you accept
So thank you. Taylor I'm happy to do it. Uh Paul S is there reciprocity. Other nearby colleges for classes. If not offered at Loyola. Yes, I know there are some restrictions. But yes that's usually approved by individual Department chairs so.
Are you familiar with the network not OK so for those students? Who are interested in taking classes that we do not offer at Layola, just so that you know, there's about 14 universities in Baltimore city without number in mind. There's about 160,000. Postsecondary up students right pursuing their education here in Baltimore, which means that there's a lot of academic opportunities in one same location. So we're trying not to actually limit our students from those opportunities so the way that we do that is. Let's say there's a very specific class you're interested in taking.
That we don't offer let's say at John Hopkins, which is literally across the street from us you're actually able to take that class at John Hopkins for free without having to apply to John Hopkins as if you were just registered at Layla. Same thing applies there take that class bring those credits with you, but I mean, but we're done. Same thing happens with any of those partnering institutions for that year when professor JP mentions a few of the limitations. He's referring to for example, one of those classes per semester right. You can't do your entire semester at another institution because your degree is.
Layla you should want to be here. Right yes, so you're limited to one per semester, but ultimately that's kind of the Gist of it. So you don't you don't have to pay an additional fee. You have to go through additional application process. As long as that classes offered in one of these programs institutions. You're good to go. Thank you.
She's wonderful is great stuff Stephanie. Thank you very much. I'm I'm glad you found it informative. Kenneth uh so in the 5 year program so let's let's talk terms, real quick that's not technically. The five year program. However, what you can do with some students would choose to do is they would major in accounting for their undergraduate program and then graduate and be accepted into our emerging leaders NBA this will again if you check with state requirements, which I would be happy to work with you. On that that may enable you to get your 150 hours.
To meet your states, CPA education requirements and to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam pass it and then once you get the work experience be licensed so yes, that is a possibility. Nicholas ask switch. AP scores you accept I don't have the table in front of me, but usually when it's number classes, so mathematical statistics. It's usually going to be a score of 4 of a 5 depending on the class itself or all of those are listed on our website, OK, so there is a list on the website but in general if you heard.
But for quantitative classes in math and statistics. Those kind of classes is usually A4 or 5. That's accepted so there is a list that I don't have in front of me right now, but there is a way to find out. I'm sorry. I don't have better information.
Anybody else, I'm I'm I'm here you gonna hear the questions.

Are we required to take Calculus freshman year? If so, is it AB or BC, or both?
How does studying abroad help gain experience in business and think about studying abroad and was wondering its benefits from me as a business major excellent question. Yes, so I can tell you that many more than half of our students overall at loyal will will study abroad and it's a very popular thing so a lot of times. I feel like Oh well. I haven't seen you with 6 months old. That's why so some students will choose to study abroad in the nation where they eventually want to work. Some students will want to work here, but still want international experience.
Same use it as a way to learn a foreign language, so we have some students will study abroad in State Bank AC and it's kind of a little you know they get immersion in the language is kind of a separate thing. Other places like if they go to broaden Amsterdam. They have to study dot just part of the curriculum so I can tell you plenty of students will go abroad to 2 universities that have strong business curriculums or have strong business ties again. It's not required. Some people will just say. Hey, I want to go to Rome because I want to go to Italy, but some students will take advantage.

Hi, everyone! If you're interested in our AP Chart, you can follow this link: https://www.loyola.edu/department/academic-advising/students/first-year/ap-ib-college-courses
Of their host countries business connections and make that work and in fact that's what this study tours are for is enhancing those kinds of connections in making something meaningful out of it and like I said, You know, we have students visiting Intel than Google. So yeah, if you want to go abroad specifically to kind of sharpen your business skills. We've got several options from that do you know the percentage of 5 year accounting students that receive their CPA we actually just got the results. It's around 60%, which to be honest is not as high as I want it to be, but it is above the national average.
Again, we're working on making it better. I'm actually a professor for a class. It's essentially CPA prep 'cause. I got my CPA license specifically so I could help our students. So I can tell him that I've been where they are so we put together plans again. That number is not where I wanted to be, but we're hopefully getting it up in the future.
What are some classes you would have to take if you had an interesting? What are some classes now I was right wasn't classes. You have to take if you had an interest in data science, so one thing is that again. All business majors will take information systems 251, which is on essentially data science and information systems. That's a good starting point and the professors. There can help you kind of Steward your interest and say why are you interested in data science you know what? Is it that you're looking at pursuit they can recommend classes and professors that fit that kind of interest?
So again we don't expect you to come in knowing where you want to go. But if you have an idea. We have some classes that will help you kind of sharpen your perspective.
Colleen
05:49:30 PM
does loyola have any type of 4 plus 1 MBA program? If it does, is it for any business major?
Do students get their CPA and then go on to law school. Yes, I tell students that that's kind of the one two punch. You know 'cause. There's no such thing as accountant client privilege. But there is attorney client privilege so some students may say. I want to be a tax advisor great get your law degree become an attorney. It's it's a long haul because again, you've got to spend 150 hours and pass your CPA exams and then go to law school and passed the bar. It's a lot of work, but there's reason those people make so much money.
Are we required to take calculus freshman year if so is a B or BC or both? I know that we?
Oh, God. Thank you Patricia for the for the information on the the APS as far as calculus goes. We have 2. We have 2 calculus levels. We have math, 151, which is applied calculus, and 251, which is general calculus. I do not know how well they map to AB&BC but I know that students like me, who are terrified of calculus would take the 151 students who?
Better at her good at calculus, but instead probably go for 251. Both at the moment. Will satisfy the Business School core requirement, so it's whichever one you prefer.

John
05:50:46 PM
That works! Thanks
Does Leo have any type of 4 plus one? MBA program and if so is it for any business major? Yes. So we have 2 separate MBA programs. One is the professionals NBA that's usually geared toward people who are a few years out of college and are looking to sharpen their skills and move up to the next level. The One I think you're asking about those the emerging leaders. MBA program or the MVA this program is designed for people up not just any business major. But in fact any major at all who are interested in sharpening their business acumen further and getting a graduate degree.
So yes, we do have a 4 year we have a suite of 4 year undergraduate business majors and then we have the MBA for recent like very, very recent graduates called the MBA program? Yes.
Ah Benjamin thank you very much John Awesome. I'm glad that works. Thank you does anybody else have any question. This is great. I could talk all night does anybody have any other questions.

Are there many opportunities for internships if I study marketing
Olivia
05:51:41 PM
Thank you!
Alejandro thank you. Thomas are there many opportunities for internships if I study marketing? Yes, there are we have plenty we have we have? We have plenty of firms. I've heard of firms that grant. I'm not a marketing guy. In fact, as an account that required to lack creativity so marketing really isn't my thing. But I can show you again real quick? Where is my job outcomes slide? Give me a second?
Marketing has a 95.6% job placement rate for the class of 2018 and I can tell you again. Well, I don't have the numbers in front of me. I know anecdotally that most jobs come from internships. So if marketing is pushing it a plus. In job placement. Then yes marketing is pretty good at getting his students internships yes.
Anybody else any other questions.
We still have that Under Armour.
The marketing major internship.
I think we have an opportunity for students to actually interned with Under Armour headquarters. So we do I do know that we have students? Who in turn, it Under Armour. I wasn't where we actually have for marking we have a program that's dedicated to that, so again. We partner with local businesses just off the Top my head you can think of Stanley Black and Decker has a lot of our students. McCormick spice people they hire A lot. Northrop Gruman Under Armour. So we have a lot of local Baltimore further. We're pretty proud of and that tend to hire a lot of our students. So it's kind of mutually beneficial, there, it's good stuff.
Anybody else, warmer while we're here.
